Vitamins are organic substances necessary for the regulation of metabolic functions in cells and processes that release energy from food. There is growing evidence that some vitamins are antioxidants, substances that protect cells from tissue damage and may also help prevent certain diseases.
A total of 13 vitamins, which are divided into soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) or water (eight B vitamins and vitamin C). The distinction between fat-soluble vitamins and water is important because the body is stored in the fat-soluble vitamins for a relatively long time – months or even years. On the other hand, water-soluble vitamins except vitamin B12, remain only briefly in the body and therefore must be constantly fed.
